The Artistic Mission of Los Angeles Music Week Fulfilling the motto, "An Instrument of Unity, " Los Angeles Music Week serves all the residents of the Greater Los Angeles area, including its surrounding basins. The performances, projects and events impact people of diverse cultures, ages, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic groups. The scope of events offers Angelenos opportunities to hear musical genres that they have never experienced and invites them to explore venues in various parts of the city. The educational activities of LAMW are enabled in elementary, middle and high schools by donatng instruments, music instruction, mentoring, field trips and/or school supplies. LAMW takes an active role in Los Angeles' cultural tourism industry by offering a wide variety of performances that showcase the city's musical heritage. Due to the drastic
cutbacks in music curricula in schools over the past decade, the
majority
of the city's children know little or nothing about the rich musical
heritage
of the city they live in and have no scope of the musical genres
available
to them, from classical to jazz to ethnic musics. Many children
have
very few musical skills or lack the resources for acquiring them.
LAMW's program elements, such as field trips, in-school presentations
and
opportunities to interface with living musical legends, broaden musical
understanding and have created musical bridges between the communities
over the past twelve years. The sponsors and
partnerships
listed on this page dutifully enable LAMW to accomplish the
educational
goals and facilitate field trips for the school children in order to
link
music with other aspects of culture and learning. The children
derive
so much pride and motivation from learning how many famous musicians
from
all aspects of the music business grew up in their own
communities.
Face-to-face dialogue with successful living legends gives them the
impetus
to explore their own God-given talents and capabilities, inspiring them
to learn. The Children's Day field trips open up a world of
amazing wonder and possibility. Will you place an Ad in our Souvenir

In
Memoriam of Maestro Efrain Guigui
By Vicki Evans, LAMW President Los Angeles Music Week has been highly privileged to honor a vast rostrum of legendary honorees, many of whom have voluntarily endowed children with their priceless talents. The late Maestro Guigui, an irreplaceably stellar conductor of international acclaim, was the embodiment of giving. He brought the 45 piece Local 47 Senior Symphony Orchestra to the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles for Children’s Day last December, and it was phenomenal to watch them all in action. Attentive to every operational detail, the Maestro worked collaboratively with everyone to make sure that every aspect of the concert was properly addressed. His energy and compassion was appreciated by both children and adults. During this live, interactive Children’s Day concert, students enthusiastically asked and answered musical questions, listened with rapt attention, thoroughly enjoyed the diverse repertoire from Dvorak to Rossini, and repeatedly applauded the superb artistry as well as the conducting. I overheard some nearby students commenting on the musicians’ excellent technique and how they planned to do likewise in their next instrumental practice session. It was phenomenal to see the audience enraptured attentively as his daughter, Ana Guigui, sung a moving rendition of Ave Maria, 12 year old soloist Clara Lysy skillfully played the Third Movement of the Concerto Number One for Violin and children were given the unprecedented opportunity by Maestro Guigui to stand on the conductor’s riser and conduct the orchestra’s rousing performance of the William Tell Overture’s Allegro Finale. Throughout the concert, I saw students on the edge of their seats, desiring to be just like Clara Lysy and the other musicians, as some later expressed outside during lunch. When Maestro Guigui spoke, he used humor as well as a variety of teaching strategies to entertain and make the children think responsively, as they laughed, cried, whispered, replied and raised their hands excitedly while he taught them about the many orchestral instruments and the symphonies that were played. In all, this was an unforgettably unique experience which left an indelible, lifetime impression on all of the participants who were fortunate to among the select audience. For me, the music was like the rhythmic heartbeat, a tender soliloquy of passion, exuberance and love. Maestro Guigui’s precious memory lives forever in the hearts, minds and spirits of all who were so privileged and blessed to be in his presence as Los Angeles Music Week celebrates his life, his exemplary accomplishments and his uncompromised dedication to excellence. |
