ANGELES
MUSIC WEEK

Your contributions are greatly appreciated and recognized. See our Honorees Page for those who have been blessed through this service. Through your purchases, 4% will be donated to Los Angeles Music Week to raise funds for the children. Please go to the Ralph Community Contribution website, http://www.ralphs.com/ccprogram.htm. Click on Participant Sign Up, type in our NPO number 82218, your name, address and city, so that Ralphs can process this information. With your help, the injustices of inequitable arts education can continue to be addressed. Your cooperation and timely response are dearly appreciated. Thank you so much! The Artistic Mission of Los Angeles Music Week Fulfilling the motto, "An Instrument of Unity, " Los Angeles Music Week serves all the residents of the Greater Los Angeles area, including its surrounding basins. The performances, projects and events impact people of diverse cultures, ages, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic groups. The scope of events offers Angelenos opportunities to hear musical genres that they have never experienced and invites them to explore venues in various parts of the city. The educational activities of LAMW are enabled in elementary, middle and high schools by donatng instruments, music instruction, mentoring, field trips and/or school supplies. LAMW takes an active role in Los Angeles' cultural tourism industry by offering a wide variety of performances that showcase the city's musical heritage. Due to the drastic
cutbacks in music curricula in schools over the past decade, the
majority
of the city's children know little or nothing about the rich musical
heritage
of the city they live in and have no scope of the musical genres
available
to them, from classical to jazz to ethnic musics. Many children
have
very few musical skills or lack the resources for acquiring them.
LAMW's program elements, such as field trips, in-school presentations
and
opportunities to interface with living musical legends, broaden musical
understanding and have created musical bridges between the communities
over the past twelve years. The sponsors and
partnerships
listed on this page dutifully enable LAMW to accomplish the
educational
goals and facilitate field trips for the school children in order to
link
music with other aspects of culture and learning. The children
derive
so much pride and motivation from learning how many famous musicians
from
all aspects of the music business grew up in their own
communities.
Face-to-face dialogue with successful living legends gives them the
impetus
to explore their own God-given talents and capabilities, inspiring them
to learn. The Children's Day field trips open up a world of
amazing wonder and possibility. Will you place an Ad in our Souvenir
Journal? |

| About
Leah Rawlinson A Performing Arts Aficionado Sherman
Oaks Center for Enriched Studies
My passion is music, my gifting is teaching. Combined, I will be an excellent music teacher in the public school system. In 5th grade, I realized my passion for music. I picked up the clarinet and I have loved playing it ever since that day. I am not sure how I was drawn to it, or if it was the only instrument I could get a sound from. Since then, Mr. Johnsen, my band teacher, has inspired and encouraged me to continue even when I wanted to give up. He exemplifies joy in teaching and through his model I have decided to pursue a career as a music teacher. Beginning Band was my first ensemble experience and I am now in the first row in the Wind Ensemble, the highest level band at school, having played in four bands in between. This process of growing from band to band has taught me self-confidence and camaraderie with a specific group of peers. In middle school I began teaching clarinet to new music students at school. Currently, I am a Music Teacher Aid for the Symphonic Band. Being in this position makes me more aware of necessary teaching techniques. As a TA I interact with young students and see different techniques applicable in music education. Mr. Johnsen also teaches me how to motivate and discipline students. I am also involved in the behind-the-scenes and preparation work such as music sorting, organizing and cataloging instruments, and overall room upkeep. I enjoy tutoring the clarinet section, working with other sections, leading the class in daily warm-ups, and conducting. I am looking forward to conducting the class this spring in a performance. I am grateful for the gift of opportunities in my life, both planned and unexpected. Mr. Johnsen introduced me to Stephen Piazza, conductor of the LA Winds, an adult one-hundred piece ensemble, which I have been playing with for the past two years. Last summer we performed at the Mid-Europe Festival, Schaldming, Austria and toured eastern in Eastern Europe. Performing at the Opera House in Budapest marked the fiftieth country Colonel Arnald D. Gabriel, Retired US Air Force conducted in. I will always be thankful for the time spent with the Colonel - musically and socially. Spending time with him and other professional musicians this summer impacted me greatly as a future teacher. The greatest impact I can have on students I believe will come out of remaining teachable myself. The experiences at SOCES have completely shaped my life and set me on the course of my chosen profession. |
