Los Angeles Music Week,  Incorporated  is a non-profit 501(c)3, community-based outreach program, now in its thirteenth year of service.  Each year during the first two weeks of December, Los Angeles Music Week honors the various contributions of local landmark artists of all genres and works exhaustively to provide equitable access to music education for children.  LAMW shares the history of music in Los Angeles with children and event attendees, noting the part this city plays in shaping music internationally. L.A. Music Week is an instrument of unity, building bridges to the diverse citizenry while enhancing local tourism.  All contents are Los Angeles Music Week' exclusive intellectual property.  Permission must be obtained for use of these contents.

The Artistic Mission of Los Angeles Music Week

Fulfilling the motto, "An Instrument of Unity, " Los Angeles Music Week serves all the residents of the Greater Los Angeles area, including its surrounding basins.  The performances, projects and events impact people of diverse cultures, ages, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic groups.  The scope of events offers Angelenos opportunities to hear musical genres that they have never experienced and invites them to explore venues in various parts of the city.   The educational activities of LAMW are enabled in elementary, middle  and high schools by donatng instruments, music instruction, mentoring, field trips and/or school supplies.   LAMW takes an active role in Los Angeles' cultural tourism industry by offering a wide variety of performances that showcase the city's musical heritage.

Due to the drastic cutbacks in music curricula in schools over the past decade, the majority of the city's children know little or nothing about the rich musical heritage of the city they live in and have no scope of the musical genres available to them, from classical to jazz to ethnic musics.  Many children have very few musical skills or lack the resources for acquiring them.  LAMW's program elements, such as field trips, in-school presentations and opportunities to interface with living musical legends, broaden musical understanding and have created musical bridges between the communities over the  past twelve years.  The  sponsors and partnerships listed on this page dutifully enable LAMW  to accomplish the educational goals and facilitate field trips for the school children in order to link music with other aspects of culture and learning.  The children derive so much pride and motivation from learning how many famous musicians from all aspects of the music business grew up in their own communities.    Face-to-face dialogue with successful living legends gives them the impetus to explore their own God-given talents and capabilities, inspiring them to learn.   The Children's Day field trips open up a world of amazing wonder and possibility.

Professor Oliver W. Wilson,
Recipient of the Presidential
Outstanding Professor Award,
Oxford Round Table Scholar and
2001
Los Angeles Music Week
Council Chambers Honoree

Oliver W. Wilson has served as a highly esteemed full professor of Political Science at California State University, Dominguez Hills for nearly 30 years.  Prior to his position at Dominguez, he served as a professor at California State University at Bakersfield, holding numerous awards and commendations of distinction for his landmark business, political, and community service ventures. He is lauded by many for his respect for music history and its promotion among local residents through his ownership and maintenance of the 5-4 Ballroom and Supper Club, the landmark of historic blues preservation through his valiant efforts.   This ballroom holds special significance as the birthplace of Los Angeles Music Week, where the legendary Charles Brown  performed at LAMW's spectacular inception, for which the Honorable Richard Riordan, then Mayor of Los Angeles, proclaimed December 12, 1994 as Los Angeles Music Week.  It is no secret that Los Angeles was the uncontested center of Rhythm & Blues in the late 1940's.  Most of the major independent record labels were here, as were most of the era's major artists: T-Bone Walker, Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris,  Big Joe Turner, Jack McVea, Charles Brown, Amos Milburn, Nellie Lutcher,  Helen Humes, Roy Milton and countless others.  Thanks to the efforts of Executive Director Margie Evans, Los Angeles Music Week was founded. Although the location is now a dear memory, Dr. Wilson's inimitable dedication lives on through his recognition by L.A. Music Week.

A tenacious native of Louisiana, Dr. Wilson is also a catalyst for impacting the society postively having served in and administratively directed various school districts, in addition to providing leadership in several professional organizations, writing and conducting many historic research projects as well as participating in nearly a dozen political and educational associations.  His work for businesses, as a general building contractor, president and founder of Data Automation Services Inc, as well as serving as president of Global Investors and Associates, enabled him to hold contracts with noteworthy businesses and construct many buildings and homes in the affected communities.  Dr. Wilson's auspicious consultancies further demonstrate these facts, as his life's work has influenced numerous people who applaud the professor for his timely impact in their lives.

Dr. Wilson and his wife Edna, both professors, have two children, Oliver Jr. and Kathy. All  reside in Los Angeles.  The Wilsons are remembered for the application of this historic quote by Juliuis Nyere, 1968, in their endeavors:

"The purpose and responsibility of educators is to transmit from one generation   to the next, the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of the socieity and to prepare the young people for their future membership in society and their active participation in its maintenance and development."
